			<p>Since 2015, Goldfield Productions have created highly acclaimed touring musical storytelling productions, inspiring a sense of wonder and curiosty in our youngest audiences. The shows last around 50 minutes and have been seen and heard by over 9000 children in more than 60 schools and public setting.  Goldfield’s children’s productions present a unique blend of the finest chamber music intricately woven into original storytelling and imaginative live imagery in the form of simple props, puppetry and shadow-play. Ideally placed for KS1 and KS2 children, the shows develops empathy and understanding for others and encourage an artistic ‘have-a-go’ culture through the use of paper cut-out shadow silhouettes.</p>

<p>In Goldfield’s trademark &#8216;Three Stories&#8217;  style, three linked stories (featuring children in different circumstances) are told with humour, pathos and respect.</p>
<p class="ThankYou" style="text-align: justify;">500 years ago, young Leonardo da Vinci dreams of making flying machines….200 years ago, Martha Pocock is launched across the Avon Gorge in a wicker basket attached to a set of kites…and in 2020, Charley Finn has a soaring imagination taking him into a futuristic world of space travel…. Meanwhile, paper birds flit and swoop across stores and centuries, linking the lives of the children in curious ways.</p>
<p class="ThankYou" style="text-align: justify;"><i>Three Stories About Flying</i> is a show about resilience and resourcefulness, about finding inspiration in the most unlikely of places and how flights of fantasy can inspire incredible real-life achievements. Where will your imagination take you?</p>
<p class="ThankYou" style="text-align: justify;">The story is written and narrated by Kate Romano, a weekly BBC Radio 3 story-writer and presenter. Live chamber music is performed by the acclaimed Goldfield musicians (string quartet and hand-held percussion). The show is richly illustrated with shadow-images and evocative music by Andrea Gabrieli (16<sup>th</sup> century), Schubert (1824), English Folk Song and mesmeric works from the 20<sup>th</sup> century.</p>

<ul>
<li>Duration: approx 60 minutes total (50 minutes show plus question time)</li>
<li>Audio and comms: No sound system / audio is necessary. No communications system necessary (but please see below for larger groups of children)</li>
</ul>
<p>Three Stories About Flying set comprises:</p>
<ul>
<li>1 x projection screen: freestanding, floor mounted 5ft square screen (stretched fire-treated canvas over metal frame)</li>
<li>1 x portable overhead projector and small props</li>
<li>5 x lit music stands (wired)</li>
<li>1 x laser LED projection lamp</li>
<li>[All items provided by Goldfield Productions]</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Please kindly note:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>As the show involves shadow-play and projections, the performance space needs to be able to shut out daylight. The room does not have to be pitch black, but it must be possible to reduce natural daylight by around 90%. Simple blinds or drawn thick curtains are usually adequate. The darker the room, the better the show will look!</li>
<li>We would be grateful if venues could provide: 4 x adult sized chairs, I x long table / low bench (such as the ‘balancing beam’ benches used in school gyms and assemblies), sockets near to the performance space.</li>
<li>The production can be seen by up to 180 children / audience members at any one time. The show is acoustic, but if a hand-held or clip-on microphone (for the narrator) is available at the school, we can potentially accommodate up to 280 children / audience members depending on the shape of the hall (‘deep’ seating is preferable to ‘wide’ seating so that children can see the screen)</li>
<li>The production is suitable for KS1 and KS2 children. It is ideally suited for years 2-6.</li>
<li>Parking: Schools must be able to offer space for an estate car close to the venue and accessible throughout Goldfield’s engagement including set-up and performance.</li>
<li>Get-in / set-up time: 30 minutes minimum in the hall / venue (but we prefer 45 minutes or longer!) Get out / strike time: approx. 30 minutes</li>
<li>Goldfield Productions will provide:  insurance documents, enhanced DBS certificates</li>

<p>Our children’s productions are unique; we never &#8216;dumb down&#8217; and we aren&#8217;t afraid to tackle topical, relevant issues in a child-friendly manner. We mix humour, fact, fiction, empathy and wide-eyed curiosity with wonderful chamber music, drawing children (and adults) into our magical, shadowy worlds.  Our childrens&#8217; productions are developed at the highest level, yet still able to &#8216;pop-up&#8217; in a venue with just 30 minutes get-in time.</p>

<p>Since 2014, we have told the stories of paper forests, marvellous inventions, marsh sprites &amp; green mists, puppets who play toy pianos, the man who thought birds migrated to the moon, gypsy fortune tellers and refugee children who have adventures in far off lands. Each story is written and narrated by Goldfield Artistic Director Kate Romano (a story writer and presenter for BBC Radio 3) interwoven with extracts of inspiring and memorable chamber music. Over five years, children have discovered toe-tapping repertoire by Stravinksy and Bartok, the mesmerising sonic landscape of John Adams and Philip Glass, string quartets by Ravel, Beethoven, Haydn, Elizabeth Maconchy and the uplifting  folk music from the UK  and far-flung reaches of Afghanistan. Children have sung with us, created percussion ‘machines’ and learned how to make their own music-box compositions with our interactive online Scratch game.</p>

			<p style="text-align: center;"><strong>Music, storytelling and shadow-pictures for primary school children</strong></p>
<p>For four years, Goldfield have toured our schools’ productions to the Fens. Now, for 2019 we bring the Fens to the fore, combining the fascinating landscape and folklore of this area with music from the British Isles in our new production: <strong>Bogles, Marsh Sprites &amp; Green Mists: Three Fenland Stories.</strong></p>
<p>Our <strong>Three Fenland Stories</strong> are based on old folk tales reimagined through the eyes and ears of children. Linking the stories are ancient childhood games, rhymes and rituals – the lore of school children and the playground, a culture forgotten or mostly ignored by adults. Our new show is an inspirational, quirky, mysterious and uplifting rhythmical journey through the ‘<em>black glistening peat-lands, where great black snags work their way up from submerged forests below’,</em> where bogles and marsh sprites play tricks and a North sea wind whistles through stunted willows&#8230;.</p>
<p>This original story is illustrated with shadowy images and musical extracts from an extraordinary blend of arranged folk song, percussion and some of the finest 20th century chamber music written or arranged for string quartet:</p>

<li>Ralph Vaughan Williams &#8211; Norfolk Rhapsody</li>
<li>Elizabeth Maconchy &#8211; String quartets number 3 and 11</li>
</ul>
<p>The show is written, designed and produced by <a href="http://kateromano.co.uk">Kate Romano</a> and performed by members of the Goldfield Ensemble. It is ideally suited for KS1 and KS2  &#8211; although we usually find that grown-ups love our shows just as much!</p>
<p><strong>Three Fenland Stories</strong> was developed as part of the <strong>Live Music In Schools 2019</strong> scheme.  It has  &#8211; so far &#8211; been seen and heard by 1850 children in 10 schools. We are extremely grateful to the Cambridgeshire Music Hub for their vision, funding and support and the creation of this outstanding scheme.</p>

<p>Our children’s productions are unique; we never &#8216;dumb down&#8217; and we aren&#8217;t afraid to tackle topical, relevant issues in a child-friendly manner. We mix humour, fact, fiction, empathy and wide-eyed curiosity with wonderful chamber music, drawing children (and adults) into our magical, shadowy worlds.  Our childrens&#8217; productions are developed at the highest level, yet still able to &#8216;pop-up&#8217; in a school with just 30 minutes get -in time.</p>

<p>Since 2015, we have told the stories of paper birds and paper trees, marvellous inventions, puppets who play toy pianos, the man who thought birds migrated to the moon, gypsy fortune tellers and refugee children who have adventures in far off lands. Each story is written and narrated by Goldfield Artistic Director Kate Romano (a story writer and presenter for BBC Radio 3) interwoven with extracts of inspiring and memorable chamber music. Over four years, children have discovered toe-tapping repertoire by Stravinksy and Bartok, the mesmerising sonic landscape of John Adams and Philip Glass, string quartets by Ravel, Beethoven, Haydn and the uplifting and poignant folk music from the UK and far-flung reaches of Afghanistan. Children have sung with us, created percussion ‘machines’ and learned how to make their own music-box compositions with our interactive online Scratch game.</p>

			<p><strong>Production details</strong></p>
<p>STAGE REQUIREMENTS AND SHOW DETAILS</p>
<ol>
<li>Stage must be flat &#8211; no special flooring requirements.</li>
<li><strong>As the show involves shadow-play, the performance space needs to be able to shut out direct light / sunlight</strong>. The room does not have to be pitch block, but it must be possible to reduce natural day light by around 75%. Simple blinds 3/4 closed or curtains mostly drawn are adequate.</li>
<li>Staging size: space to seat string quartet with 4 music stands. To SR, space for screen (approx 5 ft square) and projector with 2m throw situated behind screen. Please allow space for the narrator to move comfortably in front of the screen. Most school halls are ideal.</li>
</ol>
<p>The production can be seen by up to 180 children at any one time. Smaller numbers are preferable for a more intimate experience. Please note that the experience will be compromised if children are not able to see the shadow screen from the front. ‘Deep’ seating is therefore preferable to ‘wide’ seating. The production is acoustic and performed without microphones. The production is suitable for KS1 and KS2 children. It is ideally suited for years 1-6.</p>
<p>Duration: approx 50 minutes</p>
<p>Audio and comms: No sound system / audio is necessary. No communications system necessary.</p>

<p>We offer a fun, friendly 60-minute workshop for KS2 children (max 30) that complements the touring show, using singing, speech-rhythms and un-pitched percussion (including simple body percussion). What are the musical patterns and rhythms we create when we speak? What patterns do we find in old playground rhymes, skipping songs, riddles and rituals? Using the ancient playground rhymes as models, children work in small groups to create and perform their own playground rhymes and riddles with singing and percussion. What words (perhaps nonsense words?) might we use today? Can you tap the beat and make an interesting percussion part to the rhyme? For older children; can you perform two rhymes or riddles at once? How do they overlap?</p>
<p><strong><em>What will children learn and achieve? </em></strong></p>
<p>At the end of an hour, each class will have devised their own riddles or rituals combining physical skills, pattern making and rhythm and can perform to each other. Working directly alongside professional musicians, the workshop is designed to:</p>
<ul>
<li>encourage creative composition and develop their sense of rhythm</li>
<li>enhance their listening skills (ability to hear a beat, to recognise patterns and cross-rhythms)</li>
<li>encourage collaborative skills and group working by making music with others and ability to hear a beat.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong><em>Who is it suitable for?</em></strong></p>
<p>Everyone. The emphasis on practical, hands-on experimentation and non-standardised methods of communicating sounds and ideas make this workshop suitable for all children including those with special educational needs. This fully inclusive workshop is designed to ignite imaginations and develop creativity within a friendly and safe framework, enabling children to communicate and express ideas with confidence. It leaves a ‘can-do’ legacy; children can continue to make riddles and rhymes with their teachers after the event. Like the show, it demonstrates that imagination and resourcefulness are the most important ingredients for making creative work.</p>
<p><strong><em>What does the school need to provide? </em></strong></p>
<ul>
<li>A classroom and ideally 2 or 3 additional break-out spaces</li>
<li>Access to school percussion instruments is helpful (Goldfield will also bring a small selection)</li>

<p>In 2018, Goldfield Productions and North Herts Music School created a groundbreaking outreach project enabling 50 young people to tell stories in their own way though words, music and performance. The result was <strong>HIGHBURY WHISPERS</strong>, a 60 minute site-specific musical theatre piece entirely composed, written, directed, designed, performed, produced and promoted by children aged 11-16 from local schools over a 7 month period.</p>



<p>Lead by Goldfield creative&nbsp;producer <strong>Kate Romano</strong> and Head of&nbsp;North Herts Music School &nbsp;<strong>Nicky Footer,</strong><em> Highbury Whispers</em> explores the history of the Victorian Highbury House through song, music, words and dance. Seven rooms and two outside spaces were transformed with lighting, sets and props into a site-specific sensory theatrical set utilising the original Victorian architecture. Audiences promenaded through the rooms, met by costumed actors, ensembles, and percussion groups as an original and imaginative World War 1 love story unfolded.</p>



<p><em>Whispers</em> was designed as a framework to offer outstanding inspirational and educational experiences to a diverse group of young people drawn from NHMS (Saturday Morning Music School &amp; established ensembles) and local schools including The Priory School, Hitchin Girls School, Hitchin Boys School and Knights Templar School. Between May – November 2018, the young team received mentoring, training and guidance from outstanding industry specialists enabling them create and deliver <em>Highbury Whispers</em>. Six public performances were given on 9th and 10th of November with a private preview (dress rehearsal) on 8th November.</p>



<p>Highbury Whispers was developed as part of the <strong><a href="http://www.goldfieldensemble.co.uk/concert/hansel-gretel-a-nightmare-in-eight-scenes/">Hansel &amp; Gretel</a> storytelling outreach programme</strong> (March-November 2018) Through an extensive range of activities developed with parters, &nbsp;<strong>Storytelling</strong> was used as a bridge-building concept and a creative starting point, giving voice to young people to tell stories in their own way. Through workshops and events we empowered young people through decision making, by putting them at the heart of the creative process and enabling them to produce vibrant and innovative work.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-left"><em><span style="font-family: Times;">Highbury Whispers</span></em> is ‘site-specific’: in other words, the show has grown from the rooms, history, architecture and acoustics of Highbury House. The house&nbsp;IS the theatre and we have dressed it accordingly, attempting to bring back some of the splendor, intimacy and warmth of this lovely building whilst making many references to its contemporary use as a school. Scenes take place around the house and outside, using the spaces to draw audiences deep into the story.</p>



<p class="has-text-align-left">We like to call our production ‘<em><span style="font-family: Times;">historically aware’</span></em> or ‘<em><span style="font-family: Times;">historically influenced’</span></em>. The real history of Highbury House is tied up with the beginnings of the Rural Music Service; it covers the period of two world wars and the suffragette movement. We have taken fragments of history and sprinkled them liberally around our story, woven together with a great deal of imagination. The real life <strong><span style="font-family: Times;">Frederick Seebohm</span></strong> was a banker and historian who funded and supported much of the early Rural Music Service in North Herts. His wife was called Mary. In our story they have a daughter&nbsp;&nbsp; &#8211; <strong><span style="font-family: Times;">Charlotte Seebohm</span></strong> – but the real Frederick and Mary had a son called Hugh (a director for Barclays bank) who was the first treasurer of the Rural Music Service. Frederick did actually not live at Highbury House – he lived in a grand house called The Hermitage (86a) on Hermitage Road. The Rural Music School were offered a small room in this house to use as an office (c. 1929)</p>



<p class="has-text-align-left">The characters <strong><span style="font-family: Times;">Harriet Ibberson</span></strong> and <strong><span style="font-family: Times;">Charlotte Seebohm</span></strong> are inspired by Mary Ibberson (a good pianist) and Edith Grubb (a professional cellist) who founded the Rural Music Service in the late 1920s and 1930s. Mary Ibberson was born c. 1880 and her family settled in Letchworth in 1913. Edith, Mary and friends played chamber music together and gave monthly concerts. A ‘varied music department’ developed from these early days with ‘a choir, a string orchestra, country dancing and courses in musical appreciation’. The students formed a club and organised trips to see concerts in London. Hugely ambitious, incredibly capable and dedicated, they put on an opera (Purcell’s Dido &amp; Aeneas) in the St Christopher Theatre in Letchworth. They also started to take their classes out in to the villages (Weston was the first) and the Hertfordshire Rural Music School grew from this. It was founded in order to be able to deliver music lesson to everyone who wanted them in the area.</p>



<p class="has-text-align-left">The schoolgirl character <strong><span style="font-family: Times;">Edith Cross</span></strong> is based on the real life ‘school girl suffragette’ Ellen Cross. Ellen was born in 1892 and met Emily Davison as a young girl, altering the course of her life. In <em><span style="font-family: Times;">Highbury Whispers</span></em>, her (fictitious) daughter Edith enters the narrative in scene 5 (1935), telling the story of her mother (Ellen) who has become a role model for the boarding school girls. We are very grateful to the North Hertfordshire Museum for sharing this historical ‘real life’ story with us. </p>



<p class="has-text-align-left"><strong><span style="font-family: Times;">Highbury House</span></strong><em><span style="font-family: Times;"> </span></em><em><span style="font-family: Times;">was</span></em> actually used as a boarding school from 1952-59 but to our knowledge there have been no fires ….or ghosts…..</p>

<p class="has-text-align-left">Young people have brilliant imaginations. They make up stories, music and dance. They design unexpected, beautiful and functional things. They are resourceful and they find surprising and creative solutions to problems. They can work alone and as teams and they approach all this with a wonderful spontaneous sense of play and freedom.</p>



<p class="has-text-align-left"><em><span style="font-family: Times;">Highbury Whispers</span></em> was a ground-breaking pilot project entirely founded upon the belief in the capabilities and creativity of young people. Devised by Goldfield Productions and the North Herts Music School, we thought..<em><span style="font-family: Times;">…what if we gave young people a space, support and a framework? Could a large group of children, coming together for the first time, create a piece of musical theatre from scratch in six months?</span></em> Well, they could and they did.</p>



<p class="has-text-align-left">When we first met in May 2018, all we had was a building (Highbury House). There was no script, no songs, no cast, no story, no costumes. Over a series of workshops (‘<em><span style="font-family: Times;">How does a production company work?’)</span></em> our young people have discovered the roles that they wanted to take on and used their imagination, skills, talent and resourcefulness to create a new musical that &#8211; truthfully &#8211; exceeded all our expectations.</p>



<p class="has-text-align-left">Some of our young people stepped out of their comfort zones from the start, attracted to the project by the chance to try something new. Others took time to develop existing skills in different ways. Almost everyone has a multiple role (often ‘on stage’ and back-stage too). Its been particularly striking how many have grown into roles they did not originally consider, willingly stepping up, saying ‘<em><span style="font-family: Times;">I can do that</span></em>’.</p>



<p class="has-text-align-left">They have been supported by a group of outstanding industry mentors who have come into the project at various points and shared what they know- never dictating, but working alongside the young team and showing them how professionals go about creating a show. Our mentors include international opera and theatre director<strong> Caroline Clegg</strong>, leading dance practitioner <strong>Jane Turner</strong>, <strong>Rachel Willis</strong> from <em><span style="font-family: Times;">Let’s Go Sewing, </span></em>lighting expert <strong>Georgie Ekers</strong>, percussionist <strong>Caz Wolfson</strong>, make up from <strong>Dimitra Zenetzi</strong> and set design from <strong>Andy Lawrence</strong> (Theatre of Widdershins). We are very grateful to <strong>Rachel Thomas, Rowena Thompson</strong> and <strong>Bridget Caldecote</strong> for additional music coaching.</p>



<p class="has-text-align-left">Best of all, these young people worked as a huge cohesive team. They are a supportive, hard-working, quick-thinking, kind and thoughtful community and its impossible to express just how much we have enjoyed working with them. All the mentors, Nicky Footer and I are proud of every single one of them and the essential parts they have played in bringing <em><span style="font-family: Times;">Highbury Whispers</span></em> to life. They have demonstrated beyond doubt that what young people need to produce outstanding creative work is support, time, encouragement and a ‘playground’ in which to let their imaginations run free – they will do the rest.</p>

			<p>Goldfield Productions weave their trademark magic of storytelling, simple shadow-play images and the finest chamber music to create <strong>Three Stories About Home.</strong></p>
<p>Inspired by our 2018 <a href="http://www.goldfieldensemble.co.uk/concert/hansel-gretel-a-nightmare-in-eight-scenes/">Hansel &amp; Gretel </a>project, this pop-up sister production draws on themes of homelessness, shadow puppetry and spoken word storytelling woven together with live chamber music. It tells the stories of travelling families, of children who discover adventures in unknown places, of young people who start their lives again with new friends in foreign lands. Told with the greatest empathy, sensitivity and respect, <strong>Three Stories About Home </strong>opens up a world of wonder and curiosity about the different type of places that children might call home today.</p>

The puppets were wonderful and the whole performance was beautifully thought through and put together.<br />
I was particularly struck by the very high standard of music. It seems to me that many pupils do not hear live performances very often, and most do not have the opportunity to be so near to musicians. The way that you told the stories totally captured their interest and the way that they were woven together was magical. There were some heart-stopping moments and some tough situations. I was moved by the situations that you described, and conscious that for some of our pupils who were listening, life is not straight-forward.<br />
The professional standards of both music and literature meant that the listeners of all ages engaged and to empathised; there was no option simply to spectate. <p>Staging: space to seat 4 musicians and 4 music stands. To one side, space for screen (approx 2m square) and projector with 2m throw situated behind screen. Please allow space for the narrator to move comfortably in front of the screen. Most school halls are ideal.</p>
<p>Equipment: the Goldfield Ensemble will bring all equipment needed except:</p>
<p>4 adult sized chairs<br />
1 large table (school desk height to seat 2 -3)<br />
Please note that we also need a socket near to the performance space.</p>
<p>Lighting: as the show involves shadow-play, the room needs to shut out bright direct sunlight. Simple blinds half closed or curtains partially drawn are more than adequate.</p>
<p>The production is suitable for both KS1 and KS2 children. It is ideally suited for years 2-5</p>
<p>The production can be seen by up to 180 children at any one time. Please note that the experience will be compromised if children are not able to see the screen from the front. ‘Deep’ seating is therefore preferable to ‘wide’ seating. The production is acoustic and performed without microphones.</p>

			<p><strong>Workshop: Musical Storytelling</strong></p>
<p>We are delighted to offer a workshop in conjunction with Three Stories About Home. Lasting 60 minutes, this fully-inclusive, hands-on workshop is designed for up to 30 KS2 children. It aims to ignite imaginations, cultivate resourcefulness and a can-do, creative approach to leaning within a friendly and lively framework.</p>
<p>During the worship, an evocative short fairystory is set to music by KS2 children, mentored and assisted by the workshop leader Kate Romano and the 4 members of the Goldfield Ensemble. How might sound illustrate words? What sounds might move us, surprise us, make us happy or sad? Using conventional instruments, body percussion and self-made instruments the groups form an ‘orchestra’ and will work to perform their piece at the end of the session. The emphasis on practical music making and non-standardised ways of communicating sounds and ideas make this suitable for all children, including those with special educational needs.</p>
<p>The workshop can take place in a large classroom; ideally there should be 3 additional breakout spaces in which to experiment with musical ideas.</p>
